Chapter 45
I ordered a steak and fries. I know there were probably a lot of things I simply needed to try in Kentucky, but it was late, and I was hungry. The restaurant at Hotel Landmark of Pikeville didnât have an extensive menu, and I was pretty much the only one there except for an elderly woman sitting by the door, stirring a cup of coffee. I had chosen the cheapest hotel I could find since I had to pay for this myself.
I had brought my laptop with me and scrolled through news websites while chewing my steak and drinking a glass of Chardonnay. Yes, I know; I know. I should probably have ordered red wine with steak, but Chardonnay was my go-to wine. It didnât matter what I ate.
I didnât see him come up to me until I suddenly heard his voice and spotted a set of legs standing next to my chair.
âMind if I sit with you? I hate eating alone.â
I gave Alex a polite smile. In all honesty, I wanted to say no, but before I opened my mouth, he had already sat down and was looking at the menu.
âHowâs the steak?â he asked and nodded toward my plate with my half-eaten filet mignon.
âItâs actually pretty decent,â I said and took another bite. âFries could be better, though.â
âYeah, itâs hard to ruin a steak, right?â
âQuite hard to ruin fries too, yet they somehow managed,â I said.
He signaled the waitress to come and ordered a rib-eye for himself. âAnd a Sam Adams, please.â
âCominâ right up, hon,â the waitress said, flirting with him so obviously it made me want to roll my eyes. She turned around on her heel with a soft smile and disappeared while Alex sent her one of his charming glances.
Gosh, he annoyed me.
âSo, what do you say?â he asked when his beer had arrived and the young girl, smiling widely, had left again.
âAbout what?â
He tilted his head, giving me a look.
âOh, the murder case. You know I canât talk to you about that.â
He threw out his hands. âYouâre not even working. Youâre just using your privilege to get access. Yes, I checked. I called and asked for you, but I was told you were recovering from being hurt in service. Youâre still on leave, except youâre not, are you? Care to explain what youâre doing out here?â
I put extra salt on my fries, then dunked one in the ketchup, hoping it would make them taste better.
âI was curious. Thatâs all.â
âWhat was your conclusion today? When seeing the files? It was the same MO, wasnât it?â
I chewed, then wiped my fingers on a napkin and sipped my wine.
âIâll take that as a yes,â he said.
His steak arrived, and he smiled at the waitress, then asked for coffee for after with a wink. She left, almost bouncing with cheerfulness. Alex was definitely making her night.
I shook my head slowly.
âCan we be honest with each other?â he asked.
âI donât know; can we?â
He leaned forward, giving me one of his smiles.
